GAZA CEASEFIRE PILGRIMAGE: Good Friday in New York City

This LENT, a global movement is walking in prayerful solidarity with the people of Gaza. Come and walk with us on Good Friday, March 29th from 1030am-2pm.

ALL who **peacefully protest** with us are expected to hold these 8 convictions AND be clear about the following 4 goals:

  1. IMMEDIATE and ENDURING CEASEFIRE

  2. Immediate flow of life saving food, water, aid, fuel and humanitarian assistance.

  3. Release of all hostages – both the Israeli hostages held by Hamas – and the Palestinian hostages held in the Israeli prison system.

  4. End of occupation so a just-peace can begin.

WHERE: From 59th Street Columbus Circle to Frederick Douglas Circle in solidarity with those suffering in Gaza. We will walk NORTH on Broadway to 110th Street then go EAST to Frederick Douglas Circle at 110th and Central Park West.

WHEN: Our walk will be on March 29, from 10:30am-2pm

WHAT: This pilgrimages is part of a much larger movement of peaceful protest this Lenten season in 145 cities in 8 countries. We are part of a network of autonomous Christians groups with shared convictions who are engaging in a prayerful show of solidarity in cities around the world.

  • ATTIRE: Please dress in black. Symbols and icons are welcome. For example, wearing a Keffiyeh or carrying a “baby” or cross would be appropriate.

  • SIGNS: Signs are welcome but please know that NO ANTISEMITISM will be tolerated and we will not demonize, scapegoat or dehumanize. If you have a question, please reach out to us.

  • CHANTS/SONGS/READINGS: You are free to sing, chant or pray aloud while we are gathered in Columbus Circle or Frederick Douglas Circle but while we are walking, please walk in silent reflection.

  • HECKLERS: If you experience heckling or physical threats, please do not engage. A phone number and more specific directions will be provided closer our gathering time.

Please check back here for updates, details and more information and make sure to RSVP so you can stay connected with us!

Actively Loving Both Palestinians and Israelis

**INTERVARSITY STAFF ONLY**

I don’t know about you but the genocide in Gaza and the magnitude of suffering can feel overwhelming. It is helpful to talk with people who have been engaged in a journey that I lack the deep knowledge and expertise on. So we will do just that in a conversation with Mercy Aiken from Network of Evangelicals for the Middle East.

How can Christians in the U.S. actively love both Palestinians and Israelis, now and in the years ahead, and how can they encourage other Christians to do so? Let’s talk about it! Click here to RSVP.

*Note: this event is a private event for InterVarsity staff so if you would like to attend, please email jonathan.walton@intervarsity.org.

Emotionally Healthy Activist Spring 2024

Effective leaders are able to resist pride, narcissism and hurry in an effort to serve, develop and commission those downstream of their leadership to embody prudence, humility, and a healthy love of God, self and neighbor. Undoubtedly while trying to master these skills, some barriers to growth and integration emerge for practitioners, so our EHA cohorts exist for those who don’t want to live out of their core wounds or unhelpful cultural norms, and instead want to bear fruit from their deepest values and beliefs. For all those wanting to take a formative step, our Emotionally Healthy Activist Course is the next step. Click here to sign up.

Bible Study | The Christmas Story (Luke 2:1-38)

Have you ever considered what Mary might have been feeling when she had to tell Joseph she was pregnant and what it meant for her in her social and political context? What about Joseph’s perspective as her husband to be? The layers are many! The Christmas Story is beautiful, amazing, famous and admittedly a little too familiar. Luke 2:1-38 has so much more in it than I remember from Sunday School. So we will look at this text together in community specifically examining about the emotional and social context of all those involved as well as what emotions the text invokes for us in our current social and political moment.

We believe that God speaks through His Word and we can hear from Him. Studying scripture in community and responding individually and corporately is a sign of spiritual growth and maturity. We also believe that our emotional maturity and our spiritual maturity are inextricably linked. So, our growth in emotional awareness and intelligence is essential to our growth as a follower of Jesus.

So, join us on December 15 at 12:00PM EST for an emotionally aware, institutionally engaged time with scripture because God still speaks and we are ready to hear from Him. See you there!

Debriefing Well in Crisis and Conflict

Slowing down to reflect on the things that happen every day is important so that we are able to truly connect with ourselves, God, and one another. Leaders are often called upon to help groups or individuals do that in a way that leads towards growth in a certain direction or shared goal or outcome. LEAPT, which stands for Listen, Empathize, Affirm, Point and Transition, is one way to shepherd someone or a group of people in conflict when there are time constraints, or if a structure is less flexible and a conflict arises that needs to be addressed. CLICK HERE TO RSVP!

These monthly Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Workshops will be on the first Tuesday of every month at 12pm EST via Zoom. Each 75-minute experience will feature a space for orientation and training. Moreover, there will be opportunities for follow up and Q&A two weeks later. Patreon subscribers will have access to the videos and one-on-one trainings will be available upon request. You can subscribe to Patreon OR request a one-on-one or special group session here.

COST: These workshops are FREE! But if you would like to support our work, please donate $25 OR a subscribe on Patreon subscription at $1.25/month.

Bible Study: John 4 and the Woman at the Well

Jesus, whether you are a Christian or not, is well-known for saying and doing things that people around Him did not understand. John 4:1-41 has quite a few moments like that. We will look at this text together in community specifically thinking about the emotional and social context of all those involved as well as what emotions the text invokes for us in our current social and political moment. The application of this reality is essential for serving women and BIPOC students especially those of the Black diaspora.

So, join us on October 5 at 12pm for an emotionally aware, institutionally engaged time with scripture because God still speaks and we are ready to hear from Him.

*NOTE* This workshop is FREE and we are centering the needs of Black InterVarsity staff, students and those ministry leaders serving the Black Diaspora . It is sponsored by InterVarsity’s Black Campus Ministry.

Approaching Differences: Remaining Present With Yourself in the Midst of Conflict

When entering a group discussion, hard conversation, or new experience feelings of dissonance are inevitable. What is less likely is our ability to engage our unacknowledged, unprocessed thoughts and feelings in a way that is healthy and helpful in real-time to meaningfully contribute to the group consistently. That is why we have our Approaching Differences Diagram Workshop with accompanying Skill Sheet and podcast. We can bring what is happening beneath the surface into the light so that we can make conscious choices informed by our deepest values, and communicate them clearly with those around us.

Our hope is to raise your level of self-awareness around how you think and feel and equip you to identify your thoughts and feelings and remain present to yourself amidst conflict and tension. Then you can determine how you will act intentionally to honor the image of God in yourself and those around you; and lead others to do the same.

These monthly Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Workshops will be on the first Tuesday of every month at 12pm EST via Zoom. How Do I Grow in My Emotional Awareness and Why Is That Important?

How Do I Grow in My Emotional Awareness and Why Is That Important?

The first step towards emotional health is being able to name our feelings, along with their origins. The next step is identifying the narratives that we attach to those emotions so that we are able to make mature choices and live out of our values not our wounds or harmful social, cultural or political scripts. For some of us this is easier said than done, so the Feelings Wheel along with our discussion questions and modeling helps us to put more precise words to what is happening inside. The goal of our time together is to better know God, ourselves and others well and more fully. We will also offer concrete training so that you attendees are able to lead others in similar work. Click here to register!
