Build sacred rhythms for rested, sustainable justice—where beauty and resistance naturally flow

Many today are caught in cycles of outrage and exhaustion while trying to stay sane and engaged. Is there a different way? How can you pursue justice, work towards a renewed world, and sustain your faith without burning out?

In Beauty and Resistance, you'll learn:

- how to reflect God's kingdom in every area of your life.

- how to live out a rule of life grounded in Christ and his kingdom that leads to communal flourishing.

- how both beauty and resistance are necessary to fully engage with both delight and grief, lament and rejoicing, and appreciation and disappointment.

- how to live within your limits to contribute to radical flourishing in the world, recognizing that God is God and you are not.

Beauty and Resistance shows how to hold together the tensions of delight and grief, awe and disappointment. It's an invitation to trade reactivity for rhythm, burnout for balance, and anxious spirituality for grounded connection with God, self, and neighbors. Discover the path to a spirituality where beauty and resistance naturally flow from a deeply rested life.

12 Lies that Hold America Captive

“One part history, one part wake-up call, and all parts pastoral, Walton takes us on a transformative journey. Walton applies God’s scriptural truth to the artifacts, sayings, and concepts that have formed the American imagination. With helpful historical context, he shows us how we got to where we are— and reveals the lies that we accidentally believe. With a unique combination of prophetic and pastoral, Walton gives practical and helpful tools to extract these lies and replace them with Jesus’ truths and promises.”

The Emotionally Healthy Activist Course

EHA Logo without the word podcast.jpg

The Gospel of Jesus Christ restores and renews all things - personal, relational, and systemic. And God invites us to join Him in this good work. But we need to be emotionally healthy to be able to do that. Emotionally Healthy Activists do not operate out of the broken patterns and narratives of their cultures, families, and systems of this world. Instead we take discerned, purposeful, contextualized, loving and sincere action that is informed by prayerful individual and communal reflection. Thus, Emotionally Healthy Activism is intentional action taken to disrupt the patterns of abuse, violence, exploitation, greed, corruption and every other sin that is at odds with the intended will of God for all of creation.

Our 10-session course is being revised. If you would like to more information, please fill out the booking form and request a conversation.

 Praise for 12 Lies

"In this prophetically pugilistic book, Jonathan Walton has put into words so much of what troubles me about American Christianity. Like the best and most dangerous of interlocutors, Walton says things I'm not sure I agree with, breaks taboos I've been reluctant to break, and makes me think deeply enough to get uncomfortable. I recommend the discomfort of this book to every American seeking to take Jesus seriously today."

Gregory Coles, author of Single, Gay, Christian

"I grew up in a Chinese American church that espoused biblical inerrancy, but still I was indoctrinated by white American folk religion and its syncretistic beliefs. Jonathan Walton, like a prophet in the wilderness, speaks God's truth to power and unmasks the idolatrous ways of American Christianity. May we listen, repent, and follow anew Jesus' radical call to pick up our crosses and follow him."

Russell Jeung, chair and professor of Asian American studies, San Francisco State University, author of At Home in Exile

"In a society in which Christianity and American culture have become intertwined in deeply unbiblical ways, this book is a breath of fresh air. It not only offers a challenging cultural critique but it also offers a constructive vision for how the kingdom of God might look in the American context. I strongly recommend this insightful and timely book."

Nathan Walton, executive director of Charlottesville Abundant Life Ministries

"Wounds don't heal if they are infected. In Twelve Lies That Hold America Captive, Jonathan Walton uncovers the idolatrous assumptions and infected lies that get in the way of America and Americans pursuing real change, healing, and shalom. Whatever your ethnic background, this smart, honest, and challenging work will make you examine your own heart and help you sort out the difference between the life-giving gospel of Scripture and the presuppositions of the American dream. If knowing the truth can set us free, there's freedom from idolatry and blindness that's offered in these pages."

Sarah Shin, author of Beyond Colorblind

"There's no denying that God is upsetting the American expression of Christianity in our time. Jonathan is masterful at jarring us and leading us all the same. It seems that the greatest obstacle to our nation experiencing the kind of peace we've longed for is continuing to believe that everything is okay. We need to cry—deeply and sincerely in order to begin to find the healing and freedom this nation needs. We need sharp and prophetic voices that are prepared to smash us to pieces for our own good. We need to be brought out of the deception of our own darkness and into the marvelous light of God's truth. I'd encourage anyone serious about their spiritual journey to take heed to Jonathan's words."

Rich Perez, pastor of teaching and vision at Christ Crucified Fellowship, New York City, author of Mi Casa Uptown

"One part history, one part wake-up call, and all parts pastoral, Walton takes us on a transformative journey. Walton applies God's scriptural truth to the artifacts, sayings, and concepts that have formed the American imagination. With helpful historical context, he shows us how we got to where we are—and reveals the lies that we accidentally believe. With a unique combination of prophetic and pastoral, Walton gives practical and helpful tools to extract these lies and replace them with Jesus' truths and promises."

Nikki Toyama-Szeto, executive director of ESA/The Sider Center, coeditor of God of Justice

"Jonathan has a way with words. Better yet, he has a way with truth—understanding God's multifaceted truth and the truth of our history as a nation. Backed with these truths, a wide swath of compelling experiences, and a thorough belief in grace, Twelve Lies That Hold America Captive builds a compelling case about our dangerous idolatry that cannot be ignored. Whether you lean politically left or right, be prepared to be called out and brought to the transformative call of Jesus."

Yucan Chiu, director of The Ethnos Network

"Jonathan Walton has a great gift of speaking the truth in love. In an age when striking this balance is rarely held, he offers us a way forward that doesn't dismiss difficult truths about the United States of America, nor does he simply diagnose the problem without offering us a way forward. To bear witness to Jesus and his kingdom requires us to live in truth without sentimentalizing love. We cannot witness to the kingdom of God and be held captive to lies. Jonathan offers a compelling vision of what we can become, but only if we choose to see and reject the lies we've held."

Rich Villodas, lead pastor of New Life Fellowship, New York City

Praise for Beauty and Resistance

"In Beauty and Resistance, Jonathan Walton casts a holistic vision of life in the kingdom of God—a kingdom that contrasts and upends the kingdoms and idols of this world. He pairs this vision with much-needed emphasis on sustainable emotional and spiritual formation to fuel a vibrant life of Christian justice. The church desperately needs this pairing of prophetic witness and sustainable spirituality, and Walton's stories can help us!"

Jason Jensen, vice president of spiritual foundations for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA and author of Formed to Lead

"For those numbed by the relentless polarization of this era, Beauty and Resistance is a stirring call to action. We have enough authors who tell us how we can change the world, but Jonathan Walton adds something else: a rule of life for embracing beauty and rest as well as resistance. At the core of Walton's story is a refreshing honesty, vulnerability, and a welcome belief that resistance and beauty can not only coexist but thrive together."

John Blake, CNN editor and author of More Than I Imagined

"Jonathan Walton embodies a lived gospel of hope and justice, guiding generations of students. If you are looking for a vital, restorative rhythm for sustainable justice rooted in spiritual renewal and deep engagement, this is your guide!"

Sandra Maria Van Opstal, founder of Chasing Justice and author of The Next Worship

"In Beauty and Resistance, Jonathan Walton offers a pastorally wise and prophetically grounded invitation to follow Jesus into rhythms of rest, resistance, and renewal. In a world burdened by injustice and despair, Walton guides us toward a sustainable activism—one rooted not in urgency or outrage but in the life-giving presence of the triune God."

Caleb E. Campbell, author of Disarming Leviathan

Praise for “Keeping the Faith: Reflections on Politics and Christianity in the Era of Trump and Beyond”

“The line-up of voices in this important volume speaks strongly to the powerful intersection between fervent faith and political power in America. The missteps of the present cannot continue. As these writers press us to see a new future in Jesus’ name, let us examine our own hearts and footsteps and start walking rightly.”

Dr. Daniel Harrell, Editor in Chief, Christianity Today

“God’s spirit is inviting us in this moment in time to consider what the voice of God’s people will be. This collection of essays written by practitioners, academics, and activists of faith will equip you to consider the reality of how our political structures and systems impact people. Historical insights and personal narratives will challenge our allegiance and deepen our worship.”

Sandra Maria Van Opstal, Executive Director of Chasing Justice

"This collection of essays constitutes a compelling witness to the justice claims of the gospel. This wide-ranging testimony presents a host of writers with appropriate measures of passion, indignation, and hope with reference to urgent contemporary issues. The accent on justice powerfully disrupts our all too easy compromises of the gospel, and invites us to be 'woke' in active, transformative ways."

Dr. Walter Brueggemann, Professor Emeritus at Columbia Theological Seminary

“An important, powerful book by younger Christians. Their moving personal stories and probing theological reflection challenge us to let Christ, not surrounding society, be Lord of our politics. Their penetrating, biblically grounded critique of so much of white evangelicalism will stand as an important historical witness to biblical fidelity at a time of massive white evangelical failure and disobedience. Highly recommended.”

Dr. Ron Sider, Founder and President Emeritus of Christians for Social Action

"This book is a sobering look at these challenging times. It's broad and deep range of perspectives helped me turn to Jesus, to his values, and to ask for his help. This is a great read that puts matters back into a Kingdom perspective...one that doesn't let us off the hook to build a better future in our communities and our country."

Rev. Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Former Senior Pastor of Northland, A Church Distributed
